CLINICIANS

April Martin PsyD, MA

Dr. April B. Martin is a licensed clinical psychologist serving clients in Virginia and Illinois. She provides culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, attachment-focused therapy for individuals and couples navigating anxiety, depression, complex trauma, grief, relational challenges, and life transitions.

Dr. Martin earned her Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) from Wheaton College and her Master of Arts (MA) from Houston Graduate School of Theology. She completed her APA-accredited predoctoral internship at the Counseling Center at College of William & Mary, where she provided therapy and assessment services within a university counseling setting. Her training reflects a strong foundation in psychological science, relational development, and thoughtful engagement with identity, culture, and meaning.

Dr. Martin’s approach to therapy is relational, dynamic, and grounded in trauma-informed principles. She recognizes that individuals’ experiences are shaped not only by early attachment relationships but also by cultural, spiritual, and systemic contexts. She is committed to creating a therapeutic space that is respectful, affirming, and responsive to each client’s unique background and lived experience.

Her work integrates attachment theory, developmental psychology, culturally responsive practice, and evidence-based interventions. Dr. Martin is especially committed to supporting individuals across the lifespan and brings significant experience working with adults who have histories of complex trauma. She helps clients explore how earlier relational and cultural experiences continue to influence present patterns in relationships, emotional regulation, identity, and self-concept. Through an attuned and collaborative therapeutic process, she supports clients in developing greater resilience, clarity, and capacity for secure, meaningful connection.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Martin has experience in leadership, consultation, and training. She values comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment planning, and cultivating a therapeutic relationship grounded in safety, trust, collaboration, and cultural humility.

She currently provides secure virtual services throughout Virginia and Illinois, with plans to offer in-person services in Newport News, Virginia.
